Coffee processing in Burundi
Despite the ubiquity of coffee cultivation in Burundi, each small farmer produces a relatively small crop. The average small farmer has about 250 trees, often just in their backyard.

Most coffee trees in Burundi are of the variety: Red Bourbon. Due to the small size of the coffee plantations, rootstock aging has become a major problem in the country. Many farmers have trees that are older than 50 years. But because of the small plots, it is not possible for many farmers to take the trees out of production and plant new plants. This means that there will be no harvest on these plots of land for the next 3-4 years.

Our local partner, Bugestal , is working hard to change this. To encourage farmers to renew their plants, Bugestal buys seeds from the Institut des Sciences Agronomiques du Burundi (ISABU) and grows the plants until they are old enough to sell to farmers at or below cost. In addition, Bugestal also works with communities to increase farmers' livelihoods and general equality in coffee-producing areas.
